The Relationship Between Same Sex Marriage and the Betterment of the Economy

Some Americans remark same sex marriage as a deviant from the conventional family sketch and setting. More so, some feel that legalizing it may put so much breach upon their values and beliefs. On the other hand, supporters of same sex marriage believe that making it lawful would mean equality to everybody and that gay couples should actually be given the right to marry.

But aside from the civil and ethic rights that the probable legalization of same sex marriage would definitely give to homosexuals, there are stronger arguments if Americans would just look at the bigger picture. Same sex marriages could essentially be beneficial to the economy.

In a research by the Williams Institute at UCLA College of Law, it is stated that the economic benefit of same sex marriage will boom up to$42. This includes $28 million for a rush of weddings and $14 million spawned by out of town guests. Forbes magazine articulated that “an immediate windfall of about $17 billion could be had if gay marriage were made legal nationally.” Why not? The wedding business can actually reach a total of $70 dollars a year.

Here’s the thing: when people plan for a wedding, thousands of them would generally splurge on flowers, cakes, hotels, gowns, photographers, and bands. And yes, all those acquisitions will produce or cause an increase in sales tax revenue for the government. Weddings are huge and couples would always want it to be memorable. That is why they spend millions on just one day.

In addition, same sex couples are more likely to their own professions and job. Unlike in any other traditional household, same sex couples would want to continue with their own jobs after marriage. Hence, their income, when combined, can advance into a higher income tax bracket. Their marriage penalty tax can create more revenue which will benefit the local government.

States that legalized same sex marriage experienced a hike in their economy.  The economy of Massachusetts had a boost up to $60 million. This is only an upfront example that same sex marriage could really contribute to the betterment of the economy. Thus, states should start taking action in reviewing their own marriage laws for the benefit of the homosexuals. This is not only for the economy. This is also for the homosexuals out there to be given the right to marry.

There have been a lot of changes in the society. Our culture has been evolving. It is time for the government to legalize same sex marriage. It is one of the ways to promote equality and at the same time, economic stability.
